A Different Life
I wanted to write novels when I was young but a novel wrote me. In this my autobiography, I write about my upbringing in the north of England during the sixties and seventies, the seven years I spent working and studying in London in the eighties, the five years I spent wandering southern Spain in the nineties, and what has happened to me since I came back to where my life began. My life has definitely not turned out how I expected it to when I was young, but it has always been full of scrapes and adventures, like a picaresque novel, and, looking back on it now, I am thankful that it has seldom been dull. I am thankful too for all the people who have helped me and guided me over the years, the most important of whom have been women.
