Up on the Downs

It all started with an off the cuff discussion at a Steyning Downland Scheme Steering Group meeting. What would happen if we gave our visitors an opportunity to record their musings?

Beginning in summer 2018, small tins containing a note pad, pencil, sharpener and a short message were placed on benches around the Steyning Downland. Contributions began to appear within days and two years later, hundreds of people have participated.

This anthology preserves for posterity those poems, rhymes, limericks and odes that have somehow survived rain, wind and mud, not to mention the munching of Dexter cattle. "The charm of the poetry tins on the Downs is that everyone and anyone has a place where they can be creative and put their thoughts into words. I first discovered our local tin during a walk up onto the Pepperscoombe bank from Newham Lane and I now always look forward to having a rest on the bench there and reading the latest contributions. Congratulations to the Steyning Downland Scheme on this successful initiative.”
