Ellie's life is a tragedy. She lost her mother in a freak car accident; then she was diagnosed with a disabling neurological condition. Her father has remarried, which hurts and distances Ellie. Her love life is equally disastrous. All she really wants is someone to care for her and look after her, so that she can retain her independence.
Appearances matter, and some days are much harder than others as Ellie struggles to put a good face on it and put one foot in front of the other. Perhaps it might be easier all round just to end it all, as her stepmother suggests?
But it's difficult when your legs don't work properly and you're confined to a wheelchair.
