HIDE & SEEK

Hugh Conway is a young solicitor who is given a file relating to an intestate estate, where there is no will and no apparent relatives. He goes to Suffolk to value the man’s home and its contents. Returning to the village, he is frightened by a driver who nearly runs him down. On a second visit a few days later, he is due to meet the local auctioneer, but the man he encounters drugs him and, while he is asleep, the safe in the house is ransacked. His mentor, Mr Gray, is not surprised when the impostor turns up at the office and is revealed as a member of the Secret Service. Mr. Gray himself turns out to be far more than just a solicitor’s clerk, as his past becomes clear. Conway finds that the dead man had French origins. Now on the run from the Secret Service, he is shipped to France. In Paris, he meets a French lawyer who helps him in his search and who soon becomes far more than just a work colleague. She has relations in Brittany and it is there that the threads of the puzzle are finally unravelled.
