Letters to a Nanny

London 1918 - and baby Mary is born into a household where a nanny is already employed to look after her two brothers. But her mother is being driven to instigate divorce proceedings and is acutely depressed. So nanny Barbara becomes a virtual mother to all three. The matriarch of the family, Georgiana Burne-Jones, widow of Sir Edward Burne-Jones, writes regularly to nanny about the children which is quite unusual at that period. Her letters become more frequent as Mary becomes ill and dies aged only 11 months. Barbara kept these letters, with other condolence notes including some from Burne-Jones's daughter and son, her own mother and of course Mary's mother, who remarried and became Angela Thirkell. Letters and photos in an attic are the stuff of romance. Barbara's granddaughter found this little collection and made it available for us to publish. The Angela Thirkell Society was set up to ensure that Angela Thirkell's substantial number of books, both fiction and factual, continue to be loved and read by later generations.
