Reflections from a Third Age

Retirement is just a state of mind. We’ve retired from work but not from life. Far from it; we’ve led interesting lives to reflect on. Now we have time to explore and enjoy a whole new world and do the things we missed earlier. For us that includes words and creative writing. We hope you’ll enjoy reading it by dipping in and out at leisure. The spark for ‘Reflection from a Third Age’ arose from a University of the Third Age (U3A) Creative Writing Workshop in 2016. Their Creative Writing Forum emphasised the value of learning and enjoyment within the U3A. The real catalyst came later in 2016 from one of our contributor’s poems reflecting on her life – challenges, doubts, things unsaid – all viewed from the start of retirement – and finishing with huge optimism. We then reflected on our own lives. A loose scope was formed – anything related to life’s timeline. We enjoyed writing to this ‘theme’, learning a lot about ourselves and each other. We have written in various forms and styles - from any point in time, any viewpoint, light, dark, with regret and pride. The range of emotions and ideas expressed is huge given our small number, similar backgrounds and stages in life. Memories are evoked, reflection, travel, challenges and more. Creating this book has been immensely satisfying, exploratory, challenging, cathartic and, above all, fun. We hope that you will enjoy reading it and find some inspiration or support.
