Spello was originally a Roman settlement located along the Via Flaminia. The ancient Roman road leads from Rome over the Apennine Mountains to Ariminum (Rimini) on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The town’s stone houses spread out over a spur of the Monte Subasio like the nearby town of Assisi. It is still remarkably intact and perhaps its narrow streets contribute to the lack of modern development. Walls drape around the city and two towers still stand either side of Spello’s most impressive western entrance to the town through the Porta Venere dating back to the era of Augustus. You can enter the town through the Porta Montanara, and learn how narrow a narrow street can be. Hazards include sharp bends in the wall and a doorsteps jutting into the street.
