SO SOUR THE GRAPE
This is a love story - although if you like your love stories done Mills and Boon then put it down now. This is also a tragedy - by definition a story based on the association of two alcoholics can't be anything else: but, unfolding through the fatalistic humour that is the hallmark of the alcoholic, you are spared the pain until the end. Essentially the story examines the terminal hopelessness of alcoholics - and the despair of those who love them, those who think they can help, can walk on water - only to find that they can't.
