Struggling to make ends meet, Nicole Jenson is holding down two dead-end jobs to pay the rent and keep her head above water. However, when she meets Tom and falls head over heels in love, she believes her life is finally heading in the right direction. After Tom moves into her flat, Nicole decides to embark on a career in teaching and things are looking positive until she introduces Tom to her parents, who raise concerns about his suitability for her. In a bizarre twist of fate, Nicole has an unexpected visit at work from a stranger and as a result Tom's past comes back to haunt them. Believing she knows Tom, Nicole is unnerved to find out who he really is and Tom is equally shocked to find out the truth about his own parents.
