The Bygone Years

The Cain children shared a contented family life in rural Hertfordshire which, in Victorian times, was home to prosperous farms and a cottage industry of straw-plaiting and bonnet-making. As they grew, they spread their wings. Charles went to the next village to become a farm bailiff, Caroline to Luton to make hats. Amos set himself up as a carpenter and builder in the outskirts of London. Edmund and Job journeyed further afield to the industrial north, to work as gardener and joiner respectively. “The Bygone Years” tells of their mixed fortunes through an era of rapid and intensive social change. Love of family and shared memories are the ties that bind them.
