Jack Ford's investigation agency's motto was – we get there somehow and who the hell cares how? It certainly applied when Gladys Armitage hired him to confirm her suspicion that husband Albert was enjoying a 'bit on the side' on his regular Monday night excursions. Then she could make his life a real misery. Ford didn't want the job, but the Lusby had given him the hard word – pay the office rent or get out! Being next to skint, he had no option but to follow Albert who led him to the Sawmakers Arms. But what he discovered wasn't what Gladys expected at all. In doing so, he witnessed a cold-blooded killing, which resulted in him being dragged into the police investigation and interrogated by the Goddess. Then he met the mysterious Mrs. Corby who hired him to trace her niece Sylvia who didn't want to be found. The search for her plunged him into a cesspool of blackmail and revenge involving the local porn baron, a femme fatale, the most dangerous villain in the north, and a murderous shoot-out. The affair nearly cost him his life – but the Lusby still demanded the rent! However, that turned out to be the least of his problems.
