The Red Dirt Road

In 1974, in Portugal’s southernmost province, three young people find themselves drawn together by chance during the revolution that saw Europe’s most enduring dictatorship overthrown by left wing colonels. The three are linked by a tragic happening, although at first each is unaware of the others’ involvement in the chain of events that begins with the sudden death of a young man. They form a relationship tested by love, mistrust, jealousy, guilt, blame – and tragedy. The tumultuous events in the lives of all three are set against a background of the political intrigue and anarchy that was ever present in Portugal during the spring of 1974 and through the following year. A painful journey of realisation and recognition ends suddenly in tragedy on a flooded road, deep in the Portuguese countryside, in a miasma of blood and red dirt.
