Vicious Loops and Pendulums 2nd Edition
The book applies lessons from science and engineering to everyday life. They play an important part in determining the performance of numerous systems in sociology, psychology, finance, economics and many others. The positive feedback loop can be dangerous unless kept under control - it is often known as a vicious circle. It is nevertheless a necessary ingredient if any activity is to perpetuate itself. A successful business thrives on such a loop (it can also cause the unsuccessful business to go bankrupt). The self-confidence of people is subject to this phenomena and so too is the confidence in financial institutions - especially when rumours are spread. The negative feedback loop is required for stability and the control of situations. Dangers can arise when there is delay in this form feedback since it can give rise to instability. This book started when the author became aware how many people did not think about these basic rules which control many facets of our daily life. When the ideas were floated at some writers groups an animated discussion always followed and aroused a much interest. The aim is to spread that interest around a wider readership of an informed, but non-scientific public.
