When the nuclear submarine HMS Saturn fails to return from patrol, Lieutenant Commander Chris Anderson is sent to Leningrad to try to find out what happened. At the same time, Dr Andera Walker is in the city as a guest of the Russians to provenance the gold box. Could it really be the work of Faberge? What the Russians don't know is that there is a second box, in London and the British know it contains a clue to a secret that they have been chasing for decades. Meanwhile Major Yuri Kuznetsov of the KGB is also showing an unhealthy interest in the gold box, and he is prepared to kill to find out its meaning, and the CIA will go to any length to stop him.
