The Bin Brigade
On teacher training practice, a student encounters a variety of teachers and pupils, each with their own story. His experience merges learning their stories in class and in the staffroom with themes such as Scottish history, music, education, philosophy, sport, sociology, professional disappointment and the songs of Roddy Frame. He gradually becomes aware of the tragic personal narratives which lie behind the humour of some of the characters he meets in school, including staff such as Mr Tambourine Man, Sandwich Toaster, Bastard Guy, Ex-Cop and Armpits. But ultimately it is a group of pupils known as the Bin Brigade whose lives are bound to have an impact on the student's perspective of teaching once his time with them comes to an end.
