Profile: Elizabeth Morley
About This Author
Elizabeth Morley writes and illustrates stories for children aged 7-11. These are above all adventure stories - full of mystery, danger, and twists and turns. The characters are well drawn, the plots fast-moving and the locations colourful. And their sprinkling of subtle humour will delight many a grown-up, too.
The stories are also thoroughly researched - making them educational as well as fun. Each book finishes with a 4-6 page postscript explaining the real life facts behind the story. For, though set in a parallel world populated by hedgehogs, they are nevertheless based on the fascinating world around us. The hedgehogs are very much like us (with a few added extras - notably the ability to hibernate). The locations are inspired by real places, most of which the author has visited (such as France, Iceland and Germany) but a few of which she has not (a video tour by astronaut Suni Williams is sadly the closest she has got to the International Space Station). The plots also take in real events (such as the planning for Operation Sea Lion in World War II) and real science and technology (from thermite's ability to burn under water to NASA's space shuttle and robot-cum-astronaut, Robonaut).
