Profile: Catherine E. Walcott

About This Author

Catherine Walcott studied languages at King's College, London and was much involved in Chapel and chaplaincy life. She puts down the becoming an Anglican and agreeing to get confirmed down to copious supplies of free tea and her chaplain's crazy & unorthodox patterned clerical shirts! She was brought up Pentecostal, hence the Christian contemporary music, went to Roman Catholic sixth form which introduced her to quieter forms of worship as well as liturgy to help give her something to say and found with Chapel life at King's that Anglican meant you could have catholic traditions of worship but still get to be a protestant. Anglicanism stuck. The copious supply of tea and biccies did too. She has lived through various painful parts in her life, growing up was not easy, nor a few other things in life but amongst these, though and sometimes out of these, have come times of great joy and living life to the full and knowing the wonder of grace, forgiveness and healing despite it all. From all this these prayers come. She moved after university three miles down the road from King's to Chelsea, is still in a parish in Chelsea, rides a thumping great big motorbike and is a biker, turning up at Eucharist on occasion in leathers with a helmet under her arm. She has been known to alternate terrifying the neighbours with Verdi's Requiem full volume from the motorbike stereo to doing the same with Black Sabbath. Usually Chelsea gets Black Sabbath and the motorbike rally gets Verdi's Requiem, just to be awkward! Lent and Passiontide this year were spent dying her hair liturgically matching - purple and then red in succession. The parish looked on with much amusement. On her civilised side, she acolytes and also sings parish choir and Diocesan choir as well as sacred choral work in concert in Ealing. She has travelled widely and became a Franciscan Companion to help give more structure to her spiritual life as well as much needed Franciscan simplicity when she realised her shoe collection exceeded the amount of space she had for it. She's still working on the cutting down part of the shoe buying. As for the next part of her life - heavens knows where God has in mind next! God has cunning plans....
