Malcolm Read trained at Cambridge and St Thomas's hospital. He qualified as a doctor in 1966 and specialised in sports and orthopaedic medicine. He became an Olympic medical officer at several games and was himself an Olympian. He retired in 2007. He is married with two children and four grandchildren
