I was born in 1954 in Finsbury Park, North London, the first child of Irish immigrant parents, who met in the capital. My mum was from Cork and my dad was from Sligo. They went on to have two more children, a second son, Andrew, and a daughter, Deirdre. I went to Christ The King Catholic primary school and St Aloysius College grammar school. Thereafter I did a degree in French Literature at Liverpool University and after a year spent as a roadsweeper in the London Borough of Islington I did a teachers training course at Leicester Polytechnic. I had a 36 year teaching career working in London in the boroughs of Newham, Redbridge, Harringay and Waltham Forest, interrupted by a year teaching English near Lyon, France. In 1996 I married Lesley, now my wife, and we have a son, Feargal, who is studyind Drama at Staffordshire University, and a daughter, Niamh, who is studying for the International Baccalaureat. I support Arsenal FC and I follow the Republic of Ireland at all sports, particularly football. My heroes are singer/guitarist Richard Thompson and Dennis Skinner MP.
