A collection of short stories, like a box of chocolates, is not designed to be devoured in one sitting. Just as a chocolatier puts careful thought into creating many different flavours to delight your palate, so these short stories have been written with many different ‘flavours’ to delight your emotional ‘palate’. In either case, if devoured one after the other without savouring, the distinct flavours will be lost. This is a book to keep by your favourite reading chair, or by your bed, to be enjoyed when you have a moment to read a little, lay the book on your lap, close your eyes and let the words sink in, letting yourself be moved by the ‘flavour’. It invites reflection and relaxation, not because the stories contain complicated, deep things to meditate on — most are simple, sometimes sweet, sometimes with an edge — but the very fact they are all different invites natural pauses. So take your time. There is no rush.
