Drift: a partner in that ecstasy
Whilst generally restrained in print when it came to writing about sexuality, by 1900 Horatio Robert Forbes Brown was confident enough to release his collection of poems composed over a period of many years – Drift. It was published in London by Grant Richards based at 9 Henrietta Street and printed in Edinburgh by T. and A. Constable.Though not outspoken they are indisputedly homoerotic, and prominently feature strong lower-class men. Their nature was immediately apparent to those gay men who read them including Charles Edward Sayle, a gay poet, scholar and librarian based in Cambridge who visited Drift's author and dreamed of him naked using a page of poems as a figleaf!
