The Queen of Kittur

The novel deals with the life of Rani Chennamma, the second wife of Raja Mallasarja of Kittur kingdom in South India and her struggle with the Peshwa kings the authorities of the East India Company around 1624. She succeeds in killing the Political Agent Mr. J.M. Thackeray in the first battle but is unfortunately defeated in the second battle as she is betrayed by her own courtiers. Finally she loses her kingdom to the East India Company and is imprisoned in the Fort of her own town, Bailahongala until her death. The themes of loyalty, patriotism and betrayal and the duplicity of the English rulers are depicted very interestingly in the novel.
