Profile: David Western

About This Author

David Western, originally from Ripon, Yorkshire, has lived in Pembrokeshire, Wales, for over thirty years. In between, thanks to a father in the RAF and then a career in a national bank, he has lived in Cornwall, Birmingham, Shrewsbury and Swansea, as well as two years in Gütersloh, Germany. He has been an Associate and then a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, as well as Chairman and President of his local Round Table. He's a husband, father and grandfather. He retired in December 2014 and wonders how he ever found the time to do a full-time job for forty years. A life-long passion for writing was revived by attending Creative Writing classes. The result has been travelogues of visits to Vietnam, a book of short stories, plays and poems for family and friends, and his debut novel - Gertie’s War. Gertie’s War tells the story of Gertie and Albert and their wartime experiences. Gertie is a loyal housewife happily married to the hard-working railwayman Albert. She's resiliently enduring the hardships of war, in early 1944, until one day a knock on the door changes her life forever. She suffers at the hands of a powerful man determined to use her for his own purposes. Her beliefs and values are challenged as never before. Left with only the love for her husband, her family and her inner strength to keep her going, will it be enough?
