Coaching Routes of Derbyshire

Join former coachman John Wheeler on a tour of Derbyshire. The year is 1838 and, with his career is coming to an end, he is a passenger on a series of coaches. John leaves Tamworth and in clockwise circuit of Leicestershire and Rutland to visit some old haunts and the many friends he made during his long career. In four decades working with coaches, he has seen many improvements, most being welcome changes. But this is not merely a history of two centuries of stagecoaches. We will hear stories, memories from John, his former colleagues, and his friends. Personal viewpoints on this mode of travel, the long desire to push speeds to 10mph and above. We will join them at rest spots, hear the characters and their stories. Every event is factual and every individual real. Set in 1838, when railways were beginning to offer real competition as the means of transporting cargo and passengers across the land. History records this as the first year of decline for the coaching routes, although at the time of the journey this would not have been realised, nor indeed would the speed with which the stagecoach routes would vanish.
