Can one man love two women at the same time? Can a man with few responsibilities, except to himself, suddenly become in loco parentis to two young girl’s whose real parents are killed in a car crash? This and other soul searching questions are asked in this story of human relationships and human endeavor. The man in question, Steve Hambleton, an estate agent living the high life, finds it all change when he’s landed with caring for his two nieces Rose and Millie. It’s all too much for his feisty girlfriend Josie Holbrook who departs the immediate scene, although remaining very much on the sidelines to reappear at later stages in the novel. Steve later meets and eventually marries Laura and the two of them engage of an enterprise to convert an old house, Tollerton Court, into a luxury hotel.
Steve’s father returning from exile to die, and ex-university friend Douglas and his tragic wife provide interesting side stories, but it is Steve’s new responsibilities in bringing up two young girls and his divided love for the two women that form the backbone of the whole story.
