SONGS FOR THE LIFE. Volume 1. ‘Songs for the Life’ Volume 1. is an anthology of songs which is the product of almost 50 years of performing on the ‘Folk Scene’ of Northern England. All the material in this book has been (and sometimes still is) performed in public. Many of the songs feature as music videos on You Tube. This definitive and eclectic collection of ‘real songs about real things’ comes with musical notation and chord names, illustrations, and copious notes offering information and insights into the songs as well as full hymn book style indexing. The individuals depicted on the cover of this book are mainly friends and acquaintances from the ‘Scene’ who all have shared in my songs. Some of them are now deceased, some of them are very special. Almost all of them are singers and musicians. I don’t give a list of their names. They all know who they are! The songs in this book are all presented in alphabetical order. Chronologically presented they would probably echo my life – hence the title. None of the verse presented in this book was designed to be merely read, being envisaged as performing art. Song is powerful, but to get the best from it you need to sing it – declaim it – live it. These songs are full of laughter, tears, love, anger, protest, myth, history, tradition, regional pride (and dialect!). All life is here. If you can draw as much continuing pleasure from these songs as I have derived from creating them, then this book will have served its purpose. Enjoy! Jim Jarratt 2019.
